The Scarsdale diet has been around since the 1970s and was devised
by Dr. Herman Tarnower. Unlike so many other diets which are very
short or very long, this one meets middle ground at the length of
seven to 14 days. Of course, this is still on the short side of
things, but not enough to immediately dismiss it like many fad
diets of today. The diet is based on a plan which uses artificial
sweeteners and herbal appetite suppressants. The diet allows fruits
and vegetables as well as lean animal fats. Like the Atkins diet the Scarsdale diet has been known
to produce results, especially near the beginning. However, much of
the weight lost is water weight. The diet is low in calories, so
some weight loss has to be expected. However, like all the other
diets which are based on restricting calories, we must be weary
when approaching such a diet.

An example meal in the seven to 14 day diet period will look
like this:
Breakfast:
1/2 grapefruit and cup of coffee or cup of tea.
Lunch:
Coffee and Fruit salad.
Dinner:
Hamburger meat with no bun, cooked vegetables.
Drinks: Drink at least eight glasses of water per day.
Other Notes:
- No snacking allowed.
- Plan must be followed exactly.
- Artificial sweeteners are used instead of sugar in all
drinks.
EXERCISE DURING THE DIET

Exercise during the diet is not recommended for anyone over the
age of 40, and for that matter, should not really be done by anyone
due to the restriction of calories. Although there are certainly
other diets which restrict calories even more, the Scarsdale diet
restricts calories enough to not recommend exercising during the
length of the diet.
ADVANTAGES OF THE DIET

Like the Atkins diet you can expect
a very speedy reduction in weight. The plan is generally very easy
to follow, and portions are not limited in such a way which will
cause you to cheat on your diet or want to otherwise not abide by
the guidelines of the diet.
DISADVANTAGES OF THE
DIET

The weight which you lose on this diet is mainly water. That is a
step above many diets which will cause you to lose mostly muscle,
but not the ideal diet which will allow you to burn mostly fat. The
diet is easy to follow, but is also strict in many ways. Otherwise,
the diet is low in vitamins and minerals, and will probably cause
you to gain back the weight eventually. Not immediately as in many
diets, but over time.

Like every low carb diet out there, the diet basically works
because when you restrict carbohydrate you are also restricting
overall caloric intake, and weight loss will pursue. Like most
other low carb diets, the weight will come back after the diet is
over. So, in the short term, this diet is ok, but there are far
healthier diets out there if you are looking to achieve long term
weight loss.
