Mr. Olympia Report 2001 Bodybuilding Contest Main Pages Mr. Olympia 2001 Updates Mr. Olympia Report 2001

2001 Mr. Olympia (DVD) The "real contest" at the Mr. Olympia was the prejudging. It was a titanic battle between the monstrous marvel RONNIE COLEMAN and the ripped golden boy JAY CUTLER. Jay led by 6 points at the end of Rounds 1 and 2 - but Ronnie later posed his way to a very narrow 4 point victory. Did Ronnie deserve to win? You be the judge. Jay Cutler came from nowhere to capture second place. We also saw one of the favourites in Chris Cormier go to 5th place and Nasser El Sonbaty drop to 9th place. It was an extremely exciting evening Finals show! BUY IT NOW 2001 Mr. Olympia (DVD)

This was another exciting and high caliber Mr. Olympia. Jay Cutler was ahead going into the night show, but Ronnie Coleman managed to make a comeback and take home his fourth straight title.

*Note: Top 10 qualify for 2003 Mr. Olympia contest.

Now I will make detailed comments below for each athlete:

1st - Ronnie Coleman - USA: 5'11, 265 pounds
A very good showing from Ronnie Coleman. He did not bring out the detail and crispness that he had in the 2001 Arnold Classic contest, but he had an overwhelming amount of muscle and looked very good. Although Cutler beat him in the muscularity round, Ronnie came back at night with enough points to take the title. A controversial victory still - as Jay pushed Ronnie harder than anyone ever has.

2nd - Jay Cutler - USA: 5'9, 265 pounds
Definitely the shocker of the night. Cutler was always an outstanding athlete, but never before came this close to winning the Mr. Olympia title. Much improved in every way - muscularity, symmetry and condition, and definitely deserving of his 2nd place finish. And who knows? Maybe in the future, he'll take home the title.

3rd - Kevin Levrone - USA
Kevin was not at his all time best, but still had the great condition and balance that he is known for. His legs were down, but everything was looking sharp. At his best, he is among the few athletes who can push Ronnie harder than anyone else.

4th - - USA: 5'7, 211 pounds
Shawn was classic Shawn as always. He is always one to come into a contest prepared, and this show was no different. Crisp and clean, with great lines and symmetry - With this package, Shawn will forever be a top five Mr. Olympia athlete. That said, fourth was a good place for Shawn.

5th - Chris Cormier - USA: 5'11, 260 pounds
Earlier in the year, Chris had stated that he planned to win the show. However, his condition was a little off, which resulted in a fifth place finish. Chris is among the few pros who can come in with both size and shape, and he was awarded for it. Chris was only a bit smooth, but it was enough to keep him at the bottom of the top five. A great showing, and hopefully in the future he nails it and gives Ronnie a run for his money.

6th - Orville Burke - USA: 5'10, 250 pounds
Orville has been doing very well this year. After winning both the 2001 Night of Champions and Toronto Pro Invitational, he took the advice he was given to come in at a lighter body weight and nailed it on conditioning. He has thick skin, and has difficulty keeping his midsection in when relaxed, but has an enormous, dense back which is up there with the best of the best. A good showing for a great athlete who, at 38, will likely keep progressing in the future.

7th - Dennis James - USA: 5'8, 257 pounds
Dennis had missed his peak for this show, and his condition was not as crisp as it had been a few days earlier. Still a major threat in any show at his best - in the future he will probably learn from his mistakes and peak on time for the day of the contest. A good showing and expect big things from Dennis in the future.

8th - Dexter Jackson - USA
Dexter is the kind of guy who has a problem with the politics of bodybuilding. He always comes into contests in shape, but is lacking the overall freaky mass judges award at this level. He's always improving - if he can bring work on his high lats and bring up his calves, as well as continually fine tune the rest - he should be a major force in any show.

9th - Nasser El Sonbaty - Yugoslavia
Nasser is a big man. Has good size and shape but wasn't at his best. Definitely a deserving top 10 finish, but at his best, he was once a man who could push Dorian Yates as far as possible. If he can get back to top form, he will continue to be a major force.

10th - King Kamali - USA: 5'8, 247 pounds
Kamali made the top 10 on the strength of his amazing conditioning. He was razor sharp and seemed to peak on time for the show. With further improvements he can maintain his rank in pro bodybuilding and maybe even move up a spot or two.

11th - Melvin Anthony - USA
Melvin has a great frame for bodybuilding - tiny joints and a very small waist. In shape, he is a major force. His posing routine is very good and he is an entertaining athlete. He will continue to improve in the years to come.

12th - Craig Titus - USA: 5'9, 230 pounds
Craig Titus looked very good but might have been more of a threat coming in a bit heavier. He was slightly flat, but otherwise in good condition.

13th - Vince Taylor - USA
Vince has been the Master's Mr. Olympia for several years now. With the same physique he is a highly competitive force in the Mr. Olympia as well. I had him in the top 10.

14th - Markus Ruhl - Germany: 5'10, 275 pounds
Markus has gained all the muscle mass he needs at this level of competition - now his focus should be to improve his shape, tie ins, and fine tune the whole package. With these improvements he will move his way back into the top 10, and maybe even the top five.

15th - Gunter Schlierkamp - Germany: 6'1, 293 pounds
I have no idea why Gunter got such a minor placing. Big and ripped to the bone - his symmetry is not as good as some of the top guys, but he definitely should have been top 10 material. He is certain to be a major force in the future if he continues to make improvements as he has been.

16th - Tom Prince - USA
Definitely an impressive bodybuilder. He has a long torso, but otherwise great shape. Showed good conditioning at the show and lots of dense, hard muscle.

17th - J.D. Dawodu - England
Very thick, dense muscle mass all over. his focus should be conditioning if he wants to improve his placings in the top shows.

18th - Darrem Charles - USA
A great bodybuilder. I think he doesn't get awarded because he doesn't have the freaky mass judges are in awe of. Definitely has a good future in the sport. A bit more mass and a bit more crispness, and he will be a threat.

19th - Pavol Jablonicky - Czech
Pavol is one of the older bodybuilders, and with that, has amazing muscle maturity. He needs to improve his lower body and bring it up to the level of his upper body. His posing routine is a little dry, but that is nothing that he can't easily fix in the shows to come.

20th - Claude Groulx - Canada
Claude is definitely a thick bodybuilder - good muscularity and came on stage very full. Not the best condition we've seen of him, and maybe not as heavy as is usually expected of a bodybuilder who is 5'8. However, a good showing by Claude, who at 38, still has the time and drive needed to improve.

21st - Mike Matarazzo - USA
Mike is definitely one of the funniest in the IFBB. Great, round arms and probably the best calves in the history of the sport. But in this show, he came in off, and his lack of condition brought out his structural flaws. If he had nailed his conditioning, he could easily have placed far better than this.
